Stark Warning from BBC’s Blue Planet 2

Have you been watching BBC’s Blue Planet 2?

Did you see the episode last night about the coral reefs being bleached? (You’ll find it on BBC iPlayer)

It’s sad to see our beautiful coral reefs losing their stunning array of colour and beauty and their ability to provide protein in the form of fish, which is especially concerning for developing countries.

Declining coral reef means that marine life lose their homes, which in turn causes depletion of some of the amazing marine life that lives deep in the oceans across the world.

This little fella is in danger if we don’t do something about it…

Professor Chris Langdon spoke to David Attenborough during the episode and showed him an example of how global warming affects the ocean. He stated that coral reefs could be gone by the end of this century.

David Attenborough “Carbon Dioxide dissolved in the sea water forms carbonic acid. The more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the more acidic the ocean becomes”

Professor Langdon says that all is not lost yet; “All we have to do is reduce our CO2 emissions. We can switch to renewable fuels, wind and solar instead of fossil fuels”

Everyday choices can make a huge difference to what we are doing to the planet.

When coral reefs are bleached, they aren’t dead yet but they begin to starve and can eventually die off. Some can survive short-term bleaching but long-term bleaching will cause eventual death.

The bleaching is caused by rising sea temperatures due to climate change, which is making it harder for the coral to recover and stay alive. The heat causes the coral to lose their nourishing algae which keeps them alive.

The great barrier reef, which has been growing for 20,000 years, is the size of Italy and can be seen from space, but this world wonder is in danger too and we need to help.

What can we all do to help save our coral reefs?

To start with, we need to reduce the burning of fossil fuels causing CO2 heat into the oceans, causing sea temperatures to rise.

Every time you forget to turn off the TV when you’re not in the room, every time you drive somewhere that you could walk to, every time you set the temperature of an air conditioner too low or leave the lights on when they are not needed etc.

All this causes climate change across the world.

The oceans are more in danger now than they’ve ever been so we really need to be more conscious about how we live our lives.

Here are some ideas of things you can do to help:

  • Walk to work instead of driving – just doing this once a week to start with will help
  • Get an electric car – you can talk to us about electric vehicle charging points
  • Change to energy efficient light bulbs – and turn them off when you leave the room
  • Turn taps off while brushing your teeth and have showers instead of baths
  • Be mindful of the electricity you are using at home and at work
  • Install Solar PV panels and Battery Storage – this is our speciality
  • Contact us for more ideas on how to reduce your carbon footprint
