Solar Panels for Car Dealerships: Cut Energy Costs & Power Your EV Strategy

Car dealerships are among the most energy-intensive properties on the British high street. Several demands combine to push monthly energy bills to levels most other retail businesses never see:

Showrooms and workshops typically sit under large, flat, uninterrupted roofs — close to ideal conditions for a commercial solar array. 

Where roof space is limited or already in use, solar carports and canopies over customer and stock parking areas offer a second option. They generate clean power whilst also providing weather cover for vehicles on the forecourt.

What makes this pairing especially effective is how closely it matches a dealership’s actual energy use. 

Unlike a home, where demand peaks in the evening, a dealership’s heaviest consumption happens during daylight hours, with several systems in near-constant use while the sun is up:

  • Workshop tools
  • Diagnostic equipment

That daytime alignment means a much higher proportion of the electricity you generate gets used directly on-site rather than exported. This keeps your savings higher and shortens your payback period.

2. Solar as a commercial “Energy Pension”

We often describe a well-designed solar and battery system as an “energy pension”. Tihs is because solar is a physical, productive asset that can deliver consistent, largely tax-free returns of around 11% a year. 

This is well ahead of what you’d expect from cash sitting in a business savings account.

Real UK commercial and community projects back this up. 

Redruth Cricket Club, for example, paired a ground-mounted solar array with battery storage and cut its electricity bills by around 40%. This is roughly £3,000 a year. 

For a dealership with a far larger roof and a far higher baseline energy demand, the absolute savings on offer are considerably greater.

3. Battery storage and EV charging integration

The rise of electric vehicles is reshaping what “power demand” means for a dealership. 

Rapid chargers for test drives and customer vehicles place a significant new load on your site’s grid connection. This often happens at exactly the moments your existing systems are also under strain.

For larger commercial arrays, installers typically size the panel capacity to somewhere between 110% and 130% of the inverter’s rated output. This is known as the DC/AC ratio, or inverter loading ratio. 

Oversizing the array in this way means the system keeps producing strong output even on overcast winter days, when panel performance naturally drops. 

So, the inverter isn’t overwhelmed on bright summer days, when it simply manages the surplus safely.

Panel quality matters here too. Premium modules are engineered to perform well under exactly these conditions and are sometimes backed by up to a 40-year warranty. This is a meaningful difference for a system that’s expected to perform reliably for decades.

5. DNO permits and grid connections

Any commercial-scale solar installation needs formal clearance from your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) before it can be connected. 

Smaller systems — up to 3.68kW per phase — usually fall under G98 “connect and notify” rules, where the installer simply notifies the DNO after commissioning. 

Larger commercial arrays, which is what most dealerships will need, fall under G99 rules, requiring prior approval before installation can proceed.

Skipping this step isn’t a shortcut worth taking. An unapproved connection can result in the DNO requiring your system to be disconnected, or in penalties further down the line. 

An experienced commercial installer will handle the G99 application on your behalf as part of the project.
