How to Help Reduce Plastics in our Seas

A recent survey of fifty stranded UK marine mammals found that every one had injested harmful micro plastics. The study included dolphins, porpoises and seals. According to a study by Plymouth University, one third of the fish caught in the UK also had plastic inside.

With this in mind we’ve put together some easy-to-follow advice on how to cut back on products that cause micro plastic pollution in our rivers and seas.

1. Ditch those single-use plastic water bottles. Carry a re-fillable bottle around with you instead. There are plenty of metal options if you want to avoid plastic entirely. This app tells you where you can fill up for free. While you’re at it don’t forget your shopping bags and coffee cup too.
2. Choose not to buy products that contain plastic micro beads. There are many alternatives that contain natural exfoliants instead. Use this tool to research which are ok and which to avoid.
3. Every time you wash synthetic clothing plastic microfibres are released into the water system. When possible buy clothing made from natural fibres. Wash synthetics on a short cycle, as cold as possible. Consider using a ‘guppyfriend’ designed to catch nearly all the fibres before they leave your machine. There are plenty more ideas here.
4. Carry out an audit around your home and consider which items could be replaced with non-plastic alternatives (when they’ve served their time). Did you know most tea bags are not fully biodegradable? Here’s a guide to plastic-free brews.
5. Next time you’re at the beach collect up any rubbish you see and take it away with you. Or join an organised beach clean.
